The origin of the Name Kirstenbosch is uncertain although believed to be after a member of the Kirsten family  (Kirstens Forest) Purchased by Cecil John Rhodes in 1895 who appointed a caretaker who planted the Alleyway of Camphor Trees and Moreton Bay Figs. In 1902 Rhodes died and bequeathed the land to the Government. The Beautiful gardens we experience today are due to the founders foresight , commitment and Dedication of the staff in the early days and now the Support of the Botanical Society.
