Founded in 1857 at 1450 m above sea level makes Sutherlands Night skies some of the clearest and darkest in the world. Home to the South African Astronomical Observatory and the South African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere.

Sutherland is known as the coldest town in South Africa, with an average yearly temperature of 11.3. The coldest temperature recorded in Sutherland was −16.4 °C on 12 July 2003.

Departing Cape Town through the Hugeunot Tunnel we will stop for Lunch in the Majestic Town of Matjiesfontein visiting some of this beautiful little Town on route to Sutherland. We will spend one or two nights in Sutherland this very small booming Town visiting SALT and attractions around the Town. There is a magnificent Game Reserve with a Fabulous Wine Tasting available a short distance away. Returning to Cape Town stopping on the way for Lunch and possibly Wine Tasting along the way.
